Basically Layered

by: Jannie Taylor

Basically Layered is the latest in a series of classes designed for the multi-shaft weaver who wants to enhance their understanding of weave structure and cloth construction while at the same time maximizing the functionality of their AVL loom. We use WeavePoint and WeaveMaker Mi software and AVL Compu-Dobby Looms to provide a unique learning environment. The emphasis is on collaborative learning and hands-on experience.

In Basically Layered, we will consider several multi-layered fabric construction possibilities including: layers of structure, layers and blocks, stitched layers and more. The structure and “architecture” of these textiles will be explored, discussed, and possibly woven to gain a fundamental understanding of how they are designed and produced. How to use the software to assist in the design process will be emphasized.

All materials and equipment will be provided including a comprehensive workbook and CD of all drafts used in the class. Sixteen and twenty-four shaft AVL Compu-dobby looms will be available for weaving samples during the class. Access to a computer running AVL weaving software will be available, but students are encouraged to bring their own laptop computer to class if possible.

Skill Level: Intermediate -- some software experience is desirable. Class size is limited to eight students.
