Auto Bobbin Winder

The New Products department at AVL has done it again. We are pleased to announce the birth of a new weaving tool -- the AVL Automatic Bobbin Winder.

Many people have called our Electric Bobbin Winder the best winder on the market. The problem is that many AVL users go through a staggering amount of bobbins in a single day of weaving. These weavers have been very vocal in their need to advance to the "next level" of bobbin winding. But the burning question was "What is the next level?".

When shuttles reigned as king of the industry, bobbin-winding equipment was plentiful. Problem is, these days shuttle looms are hard to find in any great quantity in modern textile concerns. Nowadays the weft yarn is shot across the loom by a jet of air or water, by a projectile, or perhaps by a rapier. As a result of this shift in technology, efficient bobbin-winding technology has gone the way of the buggy whip.

We spent the last couple of years procuring a few of these once-state-of-the-art winders. We cleaned them, lubed them, ran them, dissected them, and basically got to the point where we understood fully what made them tick (or wind, as the case may be). Then, combining basic principles from the days of old with our own knowledge of current technology, we designed our own version.

A brief description of the new AVL Automatic Bobbin Winder follows: the winder is a self-contained unit designed specifically to wind bobbins for fixed-bobbin or end-delivery shuttles. If you use AVL shuttles, this winder will wind your bobbins.

Its operation is simple; just load a bobbin onto the spindle, direct the weft yarn to the bobbin, and turn the winder on. All further motion is automatic from this point on. The weft is guided onto the bobbin by a specially designed oscillating thread guide. As the bobbin is wound to its maximum diameter, the oscillating guide will automatically traverse across the length of the bobbin. When the guide reaches the end of its travel, the winder will automatically turn itself off and faithfully wait for you to load the next bobbin.

Weft tension is controlled by an ingenious industrial tensioner. It features a large, easy-to-read dial on the side, enabling you to easily set it for a tension that is appropriate for the yarn you are winding.

There are several distinct advantages to winding bobbins automatically. First, of course, it saves time. Next, you can actually get more yarn on a machine-wound bobbin, because the AVL Winder lays the yarn down in the most efficient method possible. Further, it winds the bobbin to the optimum size for an AVL shuttle.

Last but not least, you will find that yarn feeds off a machine-wound bobbin more consistently, thereby allowing better selvage control and less erratic flyshuttle behavior.

It's the perfect tool for all serious production weavers.
